Interpreter Could Have Eased Tensions in Trump-Zelensky Meeting, Experts Say
1 March 2025, Bangkok – The meeting between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not go as smoothly as expected, raising questions about whether the presence of a professional interpreter could have altered the outcome.
Linguistic experts and diplomatic analysts suggest that consecutive interpretation—a traditional format in high-level bilateral meetings—could have slowed the conversation, introduced pauses for reflection, and improved clarity between the two leaders.
“In a high-stakes diplomatic exchange, interpretation serves not just as a linguistic bridge but also as a mechanism for de-escalation and diplomacy,” said an international conference interpreter. “Had the meeting been conducted through interpreters, it is likely that both sides would have approached the conversation more deliberately, potentially reducing misunderstandings or emotional responses.”
The Role of Interpretation in Diplomacy
Consecutive interpretation, a process in which speakers take turns while their remarks are translated, has historically been a staple in diplomatic negotiations. It allows leaders to fully express themselves in their native languages, preserving nuances, tone, and cultural sensitivities. Without it, non-native speakers may face difficulties conveying complex ideas or responding effectively under pressure.
Additionally, interpretation neutralizes power imbalances in meetings where one leader is fluent in English while the other must communicate in a foreign language. Experts argue that this dynamic may have contributed to the tensions in the Trump-Zelensky meeting.
